COUNSELLING IN EASTLEIGH, Southampton

Dale Fewings MBACP

The space to talk, the room to grow.

Welcome and thank you for visiting

Hello, my name is Dale. I am a qualified counsellor, and a registered member of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy. I provide counselling to clients living in Winchester, Eastleigh and Southampton from my counselling room in central Eastleigh.

I work with clients from all walks of life and backgrounds.

Clients come to me with a diverse range of life stage issues; depression, anxiety and low self-esteem being just a few. As a member of the BACP, I abide by their code of ethics to ensure that you, the client, are at the heart of the work we do.

My own experience of counselling as a young man showed me how helpful the process can be in exploring issues that seem too overwhelming to deal with alone, and led to me training to offer the same kind of support to others trying to overcome their own difficulties.

Qualifications & Experience

Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling

Certificate in Counselling Studies

Certificate in Counselling Skills

Certificate in Suicide and Self-Harm awareness and prevention

In addition to these qualifications, I regularly undertake CPD (Continual Professional Development). Some of the areas I have additional training in are: Domestic Violence and Abuse, Working with Children and Young People, Working with Trauma, and Working with Clients at Relational Depth.

As well as running a private practice, I am also a counsellor for a local charity that works with survivors of Domestic Violence and Abuse, and Coercive Control, as well as Common Mental Health problems. I also gained experience working with children and young people at a Basingstoke youth counselling service

Making the decision to see a counsellor is a big step to take - but it can be a positive one. Please read on to find out more about how I could help you.

About Counselling

My Approach

As a counsellor, my role is to support you in your exploration of the issues that are troubling you. I won't sit in judgement nor will I give advice. I will offer a warm, calm environment, my understanding, and my undivided attention whilst working together.

You may be suffering from anxiety, low self-esteem, or a lack of self-confidence. Perhaps you have been bereaved and need some support to navigate the grieving and healing process, or feel stuck in a job you no longer enjoy, or an unfulfilling relationship.

I am an Integrative Counsellor, which means that I draw on several different counselling theories. This allows me to tailor the work that we do to your specific needs. The bedrock of this work is the relationship between Counsellor and Client, and our early sessions will initiate and then develop this 'working alliance'. A strong working alliance helps to build trust, and as the sessions continue, this will help you to feel safe while exploring what may be difficult feelings and emotions.

Diversity and Inclusivity

We live in an increasingly diverse country. I feel that experiencing and embracing diversity can only enrich us as individuals, and as a nation.

I have worked with diversity of age, race, religion, sexuality and gender. I consider myself very lucky to have learned all that I have from the clients I have worked with, and that I continue to learn with each new individual that visits my practice. We are continually learning, and if I am unsure of anything that you bring to a session, I have the humility to acknowledge a gap in my knowledge, and will ask the question so that we can continue to explore together.

Counselling For Men

It can be difficult to know where we are sometimes. The world is changing and the roles for both men and women are changing with it. Women's voices are beginning to be heard and the patriarchal systems of previous decades are slowly beginning to decline as society expects men to be more open with their emotions, rather than employing the 'stiff upper lip' of the 19th and 20th centuries. Even so, the old expectation for men to be providers and protectors still persists, which can leave some of us wondering what our role actually is in modern times.

Before I trained as a counsellor, I spent many years in the construction industry and met many men who needed someone to talk to yet felt uncomfortable doing so. My aim is to provide support to men who are feeling the pressure of today's world, in calm surroundings, using language you will be comfortable with.

What issues can counselling help with?

People come to me for help a wide range of issues. Here are a few of the more common difficulties that can be supported through counselling:

Feelings of stress or anxiety

Panic attacks

Relationship problems

Grief, loss or bereavement

Problems with addiction

Trauma and post-traumatic stress

Abuse

Depression

Problems with confidence or self-esteem

Anger management

Issues relating to sexuality

Difficulties at work or in retirement

Problems with family or school life

We're all living at near break-neck speed. Modern life has become a 24/7 event. We can access, and be accessed, any time of the day or night. Modern technology has put the world at our fingertips. Instant connection, instant answers, instant gratification, and yet we are possibly more detached from one another now, than at any other time in history. Cases of anxiety, loneliness and depression are spiralling, and world events; war, health crises, and economic pressures, are having a huge effect on people's Mental Health. For people already in difficult relationships or domestic situations, the stress and isolation they may feel has been magnified by these global events.

When was the last time you unplugged from the technological world? When did you last talk openly, face to face about something that really mattered to you? When did someone last truly listen? When did you last take time for yourself? If you're finding it difficult to answer questions like these, I'd like to offer you that opportunity. I offer a calm, relaxing and nurturing environment at my counselling room in Eastleigh, where for 50 minutes of the week, you can just be. That 50 minutes could be the start of a whole new you.

The therapeutic relationship is unique in that it provides you, the client, with the support and conditions needed to explore what is important to you, without the worry of upsetting the listener, or being told how you should be thinking, feeling, or behaving. Reaching out for help for the first time can be daunting, however, the good thing about doing something for the first time, is that you only ever have to do it once.

"The first step is the hardest - making a commitment to yourself, for yourself."
